the canon 1.4 is def built wayyyy better than the 1.8 which is primarily plastic and lets face it cheaper. im not saying you cant go wrong with the 1.2 cause you really cant but the price difference with the 1.4 is quite vast.

For some the $1200 may not be worth the "slight" (if any) IQ differences, ability to shoot at 1.2, superior build quality, weather sealing, or manual focus ring, but for ME it is.

Enjoy your 1.4 and keep taking wonderful pictures.

thats why im wondering if you ever saw the 1.4 close up cause the build is identical to the 1.2 minus the red line.

I'm sorry, but if you think these are identically built I don't know what else to say. Have yourself a good night Steph. :)

not to mention both produce exceptional quality pics. 1200$ is just steep to me!

The build quality is noticeably different. There's no way anyone who has tried or used both lenses would say the build quality is the same.

Of course, whether all the differences between the 50L and the EF50/1.4 is worth the price difference, it's all up to the individual. Obviously for you, it's not worth the price difference. For the OP, and also for me, it was worth the difference.

I will agree with some people here I have owned the 50mm 1.8 MKII the MK1 the 50 1.4 and currently own the 50L I have used a Sigma 50 1.4 and I will say for build quality the 50L is the best then it goes to the sigma then off to the MK1 and then the 50 1.4

The 50L is a great pice of glass.

i did try both. aside from being larger i find the construction of both 1.4 and 1.2 are solid in general whether slightly larger or not (not including the 1.8 here).
i owned my 1.4 for 2 years now use it all the time its quick sharp gets great bokeh etc. for me and ppl like me 1200$ is just a huge jump for 1/2 a stop more. however im NOT knocking the lens itself. If i had the money yea i too would indulge in the newer one. no doubt but for 300$ more i bought me a 16-35L .
what can i say photography is an expensive hobby any way you look at it.
