Using a CP with GNDs...

how are you guys doing it?

I used to have the cokin x-pros (for my 12-24mm and 14-24mm on FF setups) and I had their CP which snapped right into the holder. It wasn't cheap, but it worked quite easily. I'm looking to have the same functionality with me lee holder now and it looks like there are a few options?

lets assume this needs to work on at least 16mm on FF...

1) normal old CP on the lens, then thread the lee holder to that and deal with the resulting vignetting?
2) order a larger diameter rings for the lens so I don't need the UWA version, then step it down (since the non UWA rings have threads on the inside as well)?
3) the 105mm CP and ring ($352):

looks like the lee 105mm ring from B&H and a sigma CP from adorama will get me something that works for $219....

I'm having the same dilemma....but to throw up another choice, there is a user here who uses the lee square cpl and gets great results from it.....the difference from your #4 is that he just rotates takes the filter out and rotates it by 90 edges to vary the polarizing effect...would also sem like this would get the cpl a bit closer to other filters than the 105mm mount would

Granted you only save $40 or so, but the benefit is that it's much easier to remove the cpl, rather than having to unscrew the cpl holder when you don't want to use it

As for choice 5....that's the other I am looking in to but can't find many reviews on the sigma 105...

yeah, I'm going for the sigma 105 I think, but I spent this money on a revers GND and panel 10-stop instead...

Be careful with the 105...at 17mm on my 5D2, I get some serious vignetting if I have the 105 mounting ring in the front of two filter slots. The vignetting pretty much goes away at about 19 or 20mm. I need the two slots since I often combine a GND and ND with the CPL, and I just don't want to have to deal with removing or adding slots out in the field.

Using a tandem adapter will result in more 'stuff' hanging off the front of the lens, and I'd be willing to bet that the vignetting would be more severe than when just using the 105 in front of two slots (and since you want to shoot wide, this will be a problem). I can see where the tandem can come in handy, such as when you'd want to rotate the holder to fine tune the 4x4 CPL if you happen to have a grad that needs to be horizontal, or to adjust the angle of gradient on a GND independent of the 4x4 but, TBH, since the 4x4 isn't a 'harsh' CPL, re-positioning it 90-degrees one way or the other seems to work just fine for me.

Reason is, I prefer to have three slots installed so I can combine the 4x4, GND, and possibly an ND if need be. I can use all three slots at 17mm on a FF body and not get any vignetting at all. I just simply remove the 4x4, rotate it 90-degrees, and then re-insert it in the holder.

Attaching the holder to a standard CPL will work, but it gets difficult to adjust the CPL, it will cause vignetting, and it could get a bit squirrelly when trying to separate the adapter ring from the CPL. This setup will work, its just not the 'best' option.

thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. For anything where the angle is critical (arch or cars) I can rotate the holder since it'll be the only filter, in landscapes, 90º with the 4 options (or is it effectively 2?) will have to work.

what would happen if you do this with a linear instead? You could always remove it to AF if it actually was an issue, but I've heard it's not?

I just went through the same thing. After one outing stacking a screw in 77mm ND filter and the Lee holder and GNDs on top, I decided that would give me the sh!ts doing that every time so bought the 4x4 CPL, 4x4 ND8, and ordered the Big Stopper as well despite it being on backorder. I expect that to arrive some time early 2013 based on the way they're going with availability at the moment

^ yeah, I ordered a 4x4 10 stop from formatt today since they're in stock -vs- waiting out a 10-stopper. Went with their reverse GND as well since it's half the price of the singhray and since it's format (distributed at hitech here in the US) it'll be a 4x6 instead of a 4x5....

just be sure to check out the formatt for color casting...have read some about them giving a difficult to remove magenta cast...might we worth waiting for the BS (got mine yesterday...had to wait on the adapter ring and not the BS itself if you can believe that....cant wait to play with it)

also think i have been convinced to go with the 4x4 cpl...though for some odd reason lee doesn't distribute it to japan...they recommend going with the adapter instead....sigh....imp​orting sucks
