I've been thinking on embarking on a 'photograph a stranger' project. I know this is nothing new, but I do have some questions . I need to add that the kind of pictures I would like to take would be similar to Cartier-Bresson's famous candid pictures he took of Parisians as they went about their business on the streets in pre and post WW 11, Paris.

You know street vendors, construction, shipping and receiving, outdoor restaurants...that kind of deal .

Camera to use: I have a couple of DSLR's. I find that although they take wonderfully sharp photographs, they seem to intimidate people...

I also have a Canon G12, which although a small camera, looks like a P+S to the uninitiated, but as many know has DSLR type controls and is capable of some wonderful photographs. It looks like a much less intimidating P+S...so my thoughts are...use this camera for the project.

On the other hand, this may not be the greatest idea by yours truly .

When you think about it, it's not Paris of 50- 75 years ago. People are pretty suspicious nowadays....with good reason.

So I think I'll abandon the idea...but I do wonder does anyone actually try to take candid pictures of people as they go down the street ?

I haven't done this but I am going to do it in the future. What ever camera you want to use will be fine. For the approach I would make a little sign that says photo project or something so people don't think you're too crazy. What city are you in? Big one? little one?

What I'd like to use is a DSLR with a 50 mm F 1.4....good portrait lens, tack sharp For the approach I would make a little sign that says photo project or something so people don't think you're too crazy. We'll as you can see, in my OP, I've rethought things....the more I think about it, I just think the era of the candid street shot has passed us by...modern world , anxieties, internet, etc. What city are you in? Big one? little one?

Medium sized one...700,000 +
