Judging from my avatar, one of my favorite birds is the Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia). They eat mice.

Today, as I had one lined up in my viewfinder, I noticed that its eyes were not on me, but above me. Then it dived for cover. The hungry Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicencis) had been watching from the lamp post and did a strafing run on the owl burrow. Then the hawk stood there at the entrance to the burrow, trying to talk the owl back out and sneering at me for getting in the way.

I could probably get a shot of the owl's prey, which is the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse, but I would have to get a 1000mm lens for that.

I'm not sure if getting the owl shots and hawk shots is so much luck as it is persistence. Over the last three months, I have shot about 200 of the same owl burrow. Today, I simply noticed that its eyes were looking upward.

The red-tail wasn't going to fly at me, but I did have a white-tailed kite attack once.

Nice shots, Bob. Question.... off the subject...Have you been to Lake San Antonio over the winter to see the Bald Eagles there? We are thinking about doing a day trip this winter and I wondered if you had been.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I've never heard of that place. What state is it in?

I've found eagles nesting in Alameda and Santa Clara Counties.
