Not very many insects around here at the moment - will be several months before any in abundance - so, have to shoot the 'flies' that I already have.

The main point of doing this was to attempt to emulate, in stills, the close-ups seen in the videos on this site:

http://www.theweeklyfly.com/ (external link)

Since I'm getting a 7D (soon), I may also wish to shoot my own, similar, videos.

Setup was one YN-468, full power, with butter-tub diffuser, 12 inches directly above the subject (this would simulate work-lamp) - another YN-468, 1/3-stop below 1/4-power, no diffuser, 24 inches to the left of the 'eye' of the hook (to pick up some of the detail underneath and to give high-lights). ISO 250, f/16, Sigma 150-500mm at 500mm, 37mm of extension tubes. Distance from front lens element to subject was approx. 36 inches, approx. 51 inches from subject to sensor-plane.

Both YN-468 units were in 'S2' slave-mode. I used the on-camera pop-up flash to trigger those. I did use my hand to block any direct light, from the pop-up, from hitting the subject. I'm going to order a set of the RF-602 triggers so that I wouldn't have to use the pop-up for triggering this type of setup in the future.

First 3 images have no PP other than conversion to .jpg and re-sizing for forum.

#1 - 'Overhead' flash-unit only

#3 - Both flash-units

#4 - The final image, some PP and cropping of #3 above - I know that the 'under-wing' is slightly blown-out at the right-hand side of the image; something to work on next time. For those interested, this is a variation on the 'Muddler Minnow' pattern, tied to represent a Sculpin.

Nice shots and interesting video. Kind of not agreeing with using lead to tie flies with though. The last thing we need is more lead in the water. Just that small amount of lead he used is enough to kill a Bald or Golden Eagle.

Good experiments with the lighting - final image works well.

Thanks for the comments. I agree regarding the lead - there is much talk amongst tyers regarding this. There certainly are alternatives: steel/copper work almost as well. Same thing with weighting the line - using other than lead.

Well, if you would like some high powered persuasion, tell people to read this and watch the video (external link). Very descriptive of what even a tiny piece of lead can do to the wildlife.
