Wrong. Canon and Nikon have been decreasing noise while increasing resolution with every generation of camera.
Imagine how much they could decrease noise if they didn't increase density...
I recall a Canon engineer, shortly after the D3 announcement (which completely trounced the 1Ds III in noise performance despite its relative age), saying that they [Canon] were capable of releasing a camera with an order of magnitude better ISO performance than what was currently on the market (alluding to the D3) but the accountants would not let them. Canon was bent on going the MP route instead. Fast forward 4 years later and Canon's marketshare has tumbled drastically in every market segment, including long-held staples like sports and entry level. Canon has not held the ISO crown since 2007, where before Canon was lowlight king and then dominating every market. Today, Canon owns the MP spec in most catagories but no longer leads marketshare in any of them.
Canon needs to get back to what the people want - and that's to hold light-sucking black holes in little magnesium boxes capable of capturing images only a marsupial could see. And until we can do that, the dream of ridiculous gigapixel cameras that very few want in the first place needs to be put on hold.
