What do you guys think? I currently have the 17-85 and am not totally pleased with it. These are two lenses I am considering due to the price and sample images I have seen.

If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Also, I could go with the OS HSM on the sigma lens.

I would say the Sigma 17-70 2.8 and Tamron 17-50 2.8 would be upgrades from the Canon 17-85, see www.photozone.de (external link)

Thanks, just read those reviews.

That site seems to think the Tamron 17-50 non-vc is the better choice among the sigma 17-70 and sigma 17-50 F 2.8 HSM.

Is that generally the concensus around here?

I believe you will find a lot of fans of the Tamron 17-50/2.8 here.

Fair enough.

I know the Lens Sample section is quite large. Probably a good thing. I'm going to try and unload my 17-85 asap as I leave for San Francisco on Saturday and would like to have something better to shoot with! fingers crossed.

I wouldn't say that the 17-50 tamron is better than the 17-50 sigma. It seems, for the sigma, you get a faster and quiter af system and stunning iq.

The tamron sounds great and looks great. I'm tempted to pull the trigger but it seems from watching YouTube videos, the loud af screech will really bug me.

I also have a 50mm 1.8 hehe. I'm sure it's just as loud and I guess it doesn't matter much too me.

When I compared the Sigma and Tamron on the review website, the tamrom still edges out the sigma in terms of image quality.

You can read the below summary by Lightrules who has done quite a bit of testing and has owned just about all the walkaround lenses known to mankind!

He really likes the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM:

Regards whatever your decision, ;)
