Why do most people remove the EXIF data from their photos. We don't know what camera/lens/settings used without asking.

I don't think it's deliberate. Not all imaging software keeps the EXIF data.

And if you happen to use Photoshop's "save for web" function, it'll strip it whether the user knows it or not.

Newer versions of Save for Web give you the option. Some people may opt for giving up the Exif to keep the file size down. But a pretty common scenario is for a Web host to strip the Exif to keep their file size down when resizing a photo for "normal" viewing. You may be able to get to your "original", including the Exif, but you have to be aware and act accordingly.

My we host, PBase, does this -- when I am "image sharing" here I'll typically post to my POTN-sized "original". But they dump the Exif when resizing for their three "normal" views. If I'm just posting shots for "fun" I'll typically use their "Large" size at about 800x600 or so.
