Hi there.I just got a new flash.Need a flash extender aka better beamer. Then went online to look for one.Wow they are pricey here in South Africa for something so simple. So I have been thinking of making one myself.

Have anyone here on the foums build their own?Where can I find a template to make the arms enc?How big is the freshnel lens in front?Would really apreciate your advice. Can someone maybe share any ideas? Please help.

Check out the "Free Textbook for Beginners" sticky on this forum; he has details on making your own. Also, one can buy a big fresnel lens from B&H Photo.

Once I built one with aluminum sides. First I attempted to determine the focal length of the fresnel with a flashlight to learn how long to make the side beams. I attached the fresnel to the side beams with velcro and the side beam to the flash with velcro. It worked but came out too flimsy for my liking. If I ever did it again, I would make some sort of collar type mount for the flash attachment, with the side pieces permanently fixed to it. Maybe cut the end of a Omni Bounce and epoxy the sides to it?

I'm just in the process of making a firmer mounting for an old "Beamer" using an Interfit SGM700 (580EXII version) and some platsic tubing.
The SGM700 gives a snug mount without the usual sloppiness.

PM me your email address and I'll get some "Beamer" measurements off to you....I've got BB's for 430EX, 550EX and 580EXII so should be able to give you some ideas for the Sigma you've got.

Hi guys, I'm popping my cherry in a DIY thread ;) Very South African!

First-off, I'm very happy that I've found this forum! It's going to take me weeks to read everything here - nothing like a healthy, friendly community that's ready to lend a hand!

With that said, Canon Bob, I have just bought a 550ex and would very much appreciate the measurements that you have so that I may build one for myself (or try to haha) :)

Welcome Christopher. You will find this a very friendly and helpful place to hang out. You would be wise to avoid the gear forums unless you have very deep pockets
