I found a pleasant Pale Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio eurymedon) today. More wildlife for the 100-400 lens.

Wow, Bob! That is a beauty! It is very sharp!
I shot an image of a Pipevine while down in Tucson last week with my 100-400. I had the 1.4TC on and not much time to focus so mine is not as sharp.
Did you handhold this one?

That's one of the best butterfly shots I've seen, Bob. Very nice!

Actually, yes, which is very unusual for me.

If I had more time, I would have used the tripod that I was carrying, and I would have stuck on an extension tube so that I could get in closer. Alas, it was a butterfly, so all I had was a few seconds to shoot.

I know lots of butterflies are migratory, but for the life of me I have not figured out their patterns for months.

has to be one of the world's best kept secret. It is bordered by the sea to the east and is made up of small villages, farms, forest, brooks and rivers. I have lived here all my life and
would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent shot. I guess you can just link people here that are not satisified with their 100-400. This is deadly sharp. Really like it.

A beautiful example on how to shoot a butterfly!

I have never been able to shoot one so sharply. Mine are always a little blurry, sitting at some weird angle, gone when I snap, etc. They're much harder to shoot correctly than they look for sure!

Well done Bob!

Yes, the pose angle of a butterfly is quite critical. The one I showed here is a "side shot" where you see only one wing, and everything is along one plane, so it is easier to get complete focus. You can shoot directly behind the butterfly so as to show both wings open, but then the legs will be hidden. One wing is often closer than the other wing, so focus problems come back. The poses that virtually nobody ever gets are the "head on" shot, which doesn't really display wings except for the leading edges, and the "belly up" shot.

Bob, I think this is a very good shot. In particular, I like the composition, but it's also very sharp.
