update. went to best buy the other day and it is definately the flash. the 430 ex they had worked fine. so now to find a cheap used 430. at least the other flash will work as a slave!

Just to let you know, you cannot use 430 as a master! :)

True. But the OP can set the 430 or on-board flash to manual and trigger the aftermarket flash. With ETTL disabled there won't be a preflash to fire the other flash(es) prematurely.

yeah im just trying to bring some light (no pun intended) to my situation. im not that technical so as long as whatever new flash i get fires the old flash im fine. i know it fires with the on camera death beam so i can use it for back light or something else.

IF the 60D has custom functions try changing the flash mode from eTTL II to just eTTL. That flash is not compatible with the newer eTTL II tech.

First, you can't change the E-TTL mode in a camera. They are either E-TTL II (since 2004) or E-TTL.

Second, it doesn't matter. The flash has no idea if the camera uses E-TTL or E-TTL II, since this is entirely a question about the processing of the flash light metering inside the camera.

This is true, but the 60D can use its pop-up flash as an ETTL master.

Finally got a new flash. I made sure that I got a guarantee that it would work before I bought it online. It is a Bell&Howell Z680AF-C. It works well has a super fast refresh rate and does everything my old flash did. As long as the light sensor is in line, the old flash also fires with it so I am happy. The flash was about $80 shipped so I saved a good amount of money, plus it is also updatable for any new technology down the road. Thanks everyone for your help. Here is a shot of my daughter with the new camera and flash.
