Personally I'd never take just one lens.
The lens you have is fine as a general walk-around lens. Replacing it with 24-105 would be ridiculous... Besides the build & dust sealing they are practically the same lens, except one costs 4X as much. Both have good IQ, both have USM, both have I.S., both cover nearly the same focal lengths, both focus pretty closely. Granted, one is a fixed f4 and the other is a variable f3.5 to f5.6 lens. But for practical purposes, there'd be little gain, just a lot of additional money out of your pocket to have a red stripe on your lens.
If you are going to be photographing the hockey, you might want a longer telephoto such as a 70-200... the bigger the aperture, the better... f2.8 if you don't object to the size and weight.
If you are going to be wandering around taking scenic shots of Quebec, you might want a wide angle lens... Possibly the best bang for your buck is the Tokina 12-24/4. It's built the way Canon used to build L-series and has good IQ, too.
