My solution is to use my lowly 4MP 1D and Raw files are very small!! :) I use 2 1GB cards and that gives me more than enough room!! Now if I had an 8MP camera, I would probably be considering the Jpeg route a little more seriously!! As Drisley said, I too am not good enough to always make the proper judgements concerning WB and find it easier to rely on RAW to PP to shot after the fact!!

Many thanks.
I do use Raw but not that often, and then I use Raw Shooter Esentials for the conversion, it works well.

Gyrob
I have never done a test but am convinced theres not much differance in quallity, and yet it does appear to be sharper, do your own test and let me know what you think.

Schmoelze
Its not about having enough room on my CF cards ( as I carry 23 Gig of memory with me)
this is about taking shots that are crisp and sharp.
and I guess you may have read various post on here about the1D Mk 2 can produce soft images.
my large range of L glass certainly helps,

Thanks for comment.
I think at times we as photographers tend to get hung up on certain aspects of our
profession or hobby, be it equipment , software processing, technique, etc.
I would be the first to admit that after buying the 1D mk 2 I became very concerned with the sometimes softer images than with my D60 which I still use, (in fact lots of my photos on my gallery are taken with it)
....And so my Hang up became sharpness...
My Mk2 is one year old this week and I am now getting superb results, after working at it until I was happy, this came about by reading various bits of info from books, from Canon, and indeed from others on this forum. and also spending some serious cash on different lenses etc.

Unfortunately "sharpness" has become an overused and overgeneralized term.
Images from the 1D MKII may lack sharpness, but the resolution and detail is definately top notch!
Real "sharpness" can easily be recovered with a little unsharp mask in post.
However, resolution and detail is either there, or it isn't. It can't be recovered. And the 1D MKII outclasses most cameras, including the D60, in resolution and detail by a large margin.
The image you posted above is proof positive of this.

Thought I had better post another shot with 300mm f 2.8 L is
I recon it would be your sort of lens, knowing some of your typeof shots that I've seen.

Did you know theres a memory function built in to this lens ?
turn the memory on, focus on subject (say at cricket match, the stumps) then press the button, this focus possition is locked in.
carry on shooting all over the field, but next time you want to shoot at the stumps you just move a small ring near the normal focusing ring and hey presto its snapped back to sharp stumps, dont even need to put camera to your eye. unless you actually moved of course.

please take a look at the original ( click below the shot) which I have not cropped at all, but would do that to make a final print.

this one was shot at a ploughing match and was actually driving a tractor, yet we have good quallity sharp image, I was well impressed.
I promise this is straight out of camera no cropping no sharpening or photoshop work of any kind.
again I see no need to shoot raw with this type of subject. I'm actually using 640 iso it was a grey day very overcast but the colours look fine. by all means crop it sharpen it see what you get, my way of sharing a 300mm f2.8 L is if you like.

Wow!
These are fantastic!
They remind me of pictures from my beloved 135/2L.
You are right. That is definately my sort of lens, well, save for the price. ;)
That is one lens I would LOVE to own, although from what schmoelzel has said/posted, the 300/4 NON-IS model is also very good.
The 300/2.8 would definately be my dream lens if I could afford it.
The memory function too is something I've never heard of before. That is really cool indeed.

Very awesome.
You had some great lighting that day too by the looks of it.

Peachman
many thanks for the compliments.

Drisley
lighting seemed a bit flat but results were fine. thank you.

I remember seeing a set of pictures years ago all taken in some of the U.S national parks , apart from wonderful scenery the quality of light really lifted the shots, we have afew grey days over here unfortunately.

I have to agree with drisley on resolution and detail.... either you have it right or you don't.
I have used the 1D MKII since it came out and use it for weddings and events. I had a guy working for me that swore up and down about RAW and bla bla bla so I took a photo in RAW and one in jpg, Saved them both as jpg files then printed them out. Ask him to tell me which one was which.
He couldn't tell.
I have this problem with files sizes also some people think that with a larger file size you get more detail.... nope.
If you know how to setup your 1D MKII or any camera for that matter, you will get primo photos almost all the time. :)
