Does anyone know a good place to see Eagles in or near NJ?

Last summer I went down to the southern end of NJ, along the Delaware bay. When I asked about bald eagles, a tour guide told me "The time to come here is in February. In February we have eagles like you have robins."

So I am thinking about taking my kids down there tomorrow to see if we can spot some. I suspect that the tour guide was exaggerating a bit. So I was wondering if anyone here knows a really good place to see some.. maybe pretty close up. (I only have a 200 with a 2x).

I don't live in NJ, but I would say that Eagles there are like Eagle elsewhere, they live as secluded lives as possible. I would check with the local audubon society and ask what area has eagles. From there, you can go to these areas, but I still took me time and many trips (yes, and through many locals who told me where Eagles were, to no avail) back before I located a nest where Eagles were occupying, and that was on private property and I was fortunate to get owner permission and even cooperation to let me get closer for photos. It took me about six months to locate this setting and before that i had never seen an Eagle close-up. In general, Eagles do not sit around and let you get close enough to take a picture. My best weapon was the 500mm f/4, anything less just gets you distant pictures and not the close-up or detail you are looking for. Also, a 2x is not the TC to use to capture detail as it tends to 'soften' the image. I've tried both the old 2X and the new 2X III and both yield unsatisfactory results for birding.

You can drive out and try your luck, but I think it takes some research to really home in on finding Eagles.

Best Of Luck, and report back on your findings,

Ken

If you live in North NJ, you might want to check out some of the spots on the Hudson River or the NY City watershed area. The attached link will guide you to some of those areas.

Thanks for the tips..
Unfortunately, this weekend I came down with the flu.. I'm a bit upset too because I have plans for the next several weekends that will prevent me from doing this for a while.

After listening to Jersey jokes from Jeffery Ross this past weekend, I would guess a landfill might be a good spot! I'm only 1/2 joking since they are a common sight at many dumps. Might be worth a phone call or two.

Tele,
Here is some interseting reading for you on the Bald eagles of NJ. I am a nest observer for NJ Fish & Wildlife and I see eagles every day in the urban area of north central NJ.

It is pretty wild.. I am 50 years old, lived in PA, CO and NJ at various times in my life. I had never seen a wild eagle until last December. I had a business meeting in DE, not too far from some parks near the bay. I already knew that there were eagles living near the bay and considered packing my camera for a quick excursion after the meeting. But it was pouring rain and the forecast was grim so I decided to forgo the after-work expedition.

Wouldn't you know it, though I was about 5 miles inland, in populated suburbia, I was driving by a school with a very large, multipurpose, athletic field. As I was looking at the field, I noticed something out in the middle of the field (about 1/4 mile away) that looked like an eagle. I turned around, went back to the school and pulled into the parking lot that was adjacent to the field. Sure enough, there she was, a large eagle sitting right out in the middle in the pouring rain. So I sat and watched for a little bit when the security guard approached me. I told him about the bird and pointed; I asked if she was common visitor. He told me that in his years there, he had never seen an eagle in that field... usually it had a lot of geese though. Not one goose in sight that day! ;)

I was disappointed because she just sat and I wanted to see her fly. But as I was leaving, she took off, circled the field and flew off.. Magnificent!

I got one. I know this is a very poor picture (external link).. It was already getting dark and I had the ISO set to 4000 just so I could get the shutter to something reasonable for a 400mm focal length (70-200 w/2x).

For quite some time I have wanted a shot of a wild eagle. I had a meeting today in DE and took a trip to a wildlife refuge near the Delaware River. I asked a local if he knew any good spots to look for an eagle. He directed me to this area and said "watch the power-lines."

After taking this shot, I went an got my tripod, right as I was getting it setup, he flew away.. I missed the shot.

I went here on Saturday.. it is only about 20 minutes away. I wasn't fortunate enough to see any eagles. There were plenty of hawks (which I couldn't get close enough to). But I had some fun anyway.
