More Winter Colors

Hi again all,

It's technically still Winter for awhile yet, and both the snow and temperatures sure still confirm that here. But we see and hear so much evidence now that at least by the avian calendar, Spring has already begun.

So here's another backyard batch to savor the waning colors of Winter...

Yesterday as I was coming back from a small trip of shooting, I was thinking how boring the Mockingbird is to me now, (The Texas state bird too, don't tell anyone... heh) now though... I'm not so sure... (!!!)
I cannot believe the detail, lighting, AND skill this took, enough to make me now want to take another look at Mockingbirds when I shoot, I thought I had shot my last one, but I'll have to try and get one to look 'close' to that. . (Especially the first shot of him)
Really, REALLY something, all of them, but my actual favorites are the normally plain-Janed sparrow and the aforementioned.

Every one of your posts seem to jump right off the pages to me.

Your winter bird collections always give me a ray of hope here on the "frozen tundra"... good to see the mockingbird returning, although I don't get him this far north, I can appreciate the first sighting... love the shots of him, beautiful detail and the Red-bellied composition is a gem... and I am waiting for the return of the flicker and sapsucker ... fine shooting my friend.

Randy - Mockingbirds are fairly common here, but ours leave for months at a time at least twice each year... soon after nesting season, and then again over the Winter. When they return in the Spring the male shows up first, and literally terrorizes most of our other birds for a few weeks before settling down. He is especially merciless to chase our Bluebirds constantly, and largely prevents them from getting the treats we put out for them. After a awhile tho... he goes back to singing (and mating), and then things get back to normal for everybody.

Oh, and I'm glad you liked the Eurasian... I should mention that this is really not a "plain jane" variety sparrow. These pretty birds are kinda rare here, and they are pretty much ONLY here. They were introduced to the St.Louis area about 200 years ago, but have not spread very far with sightings mainly in a small radius around the Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio borders. You won't likely see them anywhere else in the US. We feel very fortunate to have had a family of them in our yard for the past few years.

We love our birds, and love to share them here.
