I gave my busted 50mm f1.8 to my friend, and told him if he can get it fixed he can have it. Apparently it was going to be $120, which my guess means they buy a new lens and pocket the $20.

So we were considering using some old manual focus lenses, using an adapter if we need it. He is using an XSi, and ideas? We are trying to keep these budget prices, under $200 with adapter if possible. If not, he can just get a50mm f1.8, but I am sure there are some better alternatives out there.

Thank you.

I'd recommend the pentax takumar 50mm f/1.4

Great glass with super solid metal build and smooth viscous focusing ring. Great stuff.

Just the quick little research I have looked up on this makes it look great. Thank you.

IF you can find an already converted minolta rokkor 50mm... I know my Rokkor-x 50mm F1.2 that is SWEET to use.

I did have to get a split-prism focusing screen for my 1D because with the stock screen I had NO chance to grab focus.

Tried the manual focus 50mm for a while. Takes a lot of skill and practice to manual focus. I gave up on it after a while.

Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI lens, Pentax Asahi SMC Takumar or Super Takumar are some other popular choices. All of them will require adaptors. Some adaptors have AF focus confirm.

It was kind of funny to walk about with a Nikon 50mm on my 5d2.

Nikkor AI-S 50mm f/1.4 is a great lens as is its f/1.8 sibling.. If you want to go cheaper, the Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8..

NO, not the Nikon E series. Look at my gear list and ask me questions. I have some wonderful lenses that cost me between $10 and $200. Of course, many cost way more. Give me a mm, a dollar amount and what qualities you are looking for and I'll try to direct you.

The price of it has been going up but you can get a Zeiss C/Y 50mm f/1.7 for around $150 and $20 Fotodiox adapter that will put you under $200. It acts as a nice portrait lens on a crop and its extremely sharp at Infinity and stopped down.
