I like the use of your name... But since o do mainly weddings, I think using my name is more personal than hiding behind a faux studio name. Like I believe in my work enuf to put MY name behind it.

I use my name as well. Most people use Name Photography or name studios or something along those lines. Which would require proper taxes be done and proper licencing, insurance and bookkeeping with separate bank accounts because it is a business.

My name isn't will suited; neither easily remembered or spelled correctly. So I elected to name it for my (now grown) twin sons.

I decided to reference the camera systems itself in my name. I had a hard time coming up with a name I liked and an even harder time branding myself. By stepping away from it I was able to come up with a logo I would like for more than a few months.

I also plan on eventually separating my graphic design portion from the photo portion and the more generalized name will help me do that ISO Photo Studio and ISO Graphic Studio sounded better to me than JZ Visuals, and was shorter than JZ Visuals Graphic Design, JZ Visuals Photography.

It's also a good conversation starter, "What's ISO mean?"

This is my camera, there are many like it, but this one is mine.

Picard,

To answer the first question, it truly is a personal choice of company name. My wife (the photog) and I developed our company name in about 2 minutes by combining her two favorite animals (rhino and giraffe). Turns out the name has a unique ring to it, so we ran with it! :D

To answer the second question, it is generally prudent to open a business bank account so keeping track of finances is easier. I'm not sure what the tax laws in Canada are; however, here in the states we're able to separate out our personal income taxes and business taxes all on the same forms for some business types. Check with a local tax professional on this one, and inquire as to the best methods for filing records as a business (Inc., LLC, etc.).

Hope this helps, and happy snapping!

My state doesn't require to register DBA (Doing Business As). There are a lot of photographers use their first + last names + photography/studio etc... If you want to stand out from the crowd then come up with some cool names like mine "Unik Pix" :-) Choose the name that you can add more products in the future.

I used my name for my children's portraiture business. It just made the most sense somehow.

For my doggie portrait business - I wanted something fun and played around until I came to Hip Dog Photography.

There is already a Kyle Ford photographer, I really like the mythical phoenix, always have been interested in the myth and what not. Had a friend make one for me and it just worked.
