I have just bought the EOS 60D and tried to use my Nissin speedlite Di622 flash but found that whilst it was ok to use TTL on full power it didn't have the TTL function when using a different power level available on the back of the flash, and when I tried to use this the camera software crashed and gave a warning. I purchased the flash over a year ago and I have used this flash before on my EOS 1000D and it worked ok. Do I take it that the TTL function is not compatible with the 60D now when switching flash power levels? I know it is possible to change exposure flash levels on the camera flash menu and this may be what I have to do in future, but I am surprised the compatibility has changed in a year, although I see there is an updated Nissin Di622model now.

looks like you need a firmware update for it to work http://www.nissindigital.com/en/compatibilitychart.html (external link)

I'm wondering if the issue is hardware or just software..

If I believe rightly, the OP has the Mark 1 which isn't compatable with his 60D, while the new Mark II is..

Silly me .....

I thought you meant firmware update to my camera. So I did up to 1.0.8. Problem was it didn't make any difference to the manual flash settings. Still crashed. Then I realised that, after checking the Nissin website, you probably meant the firmware update to the flash!

I checked the info and see that you have to send your flash away to be modified. So I have sent an email to a couple of vendors and will post back when I hear something!

I've had the Di866 for around nine months and have never had the need to update the firmware.

For anyone who has the same problem with their original Nissin Di622 Speedlite flash, I now learn that to have the latest update I have to send the flash to http://www.kenro.co.uk (external link) who will install the software free of charge.

My flash was sent to Kenro who updated the firmware and returned the flash by return post. Excellent service! However, regarding Canon, and as an epilogue to this thread and also this ....

https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=11854707#post11854707

.... I can only say I am very disappointed with Canon and Jessops et al! I have now been without my 60D for just over a week and still apparently have to wait another 2-3 weeks for my camera to be returned to me. Having only bought the camera early January I feel very frustrated with having to wait so long. I could have had my car resprayed and back onto the road in less time than it takes to "bend" a hot shoe fitting! This is compounded by me knowing I could have done this mod myself but was afraid of voiding my warranty. All in all, I'm very disappointed with Canon. They are certainly no small back street outfit. I would be very interested to hear from anyone employed at Canon Inc: if reasons and platitudes are to be forthcoming! Grrrrr ....

I thought I ought to post an epologue to the above. I have now collected my 60D after repairs and all works perfectly with and without the speedlite flash. However, as it all took less than a fortnight to resolve I humbly apologise for my above frustrated rant as I am now satisfied I was obviously too hasty in my condemnation of both Jessops and Canon.
