Is FedEx Kinko's capable of good quality prints or should I find a local PhotoPrint shop who specializes?

I needed some 8x12's done - the Fedex Kinko's near here said that they only do 4x6's with their automated kiosk machine, or they could try some higher quality paper stock (not photo stock) on one of their printers.

Needless to say the test print didn't turn out well. I would find a different store.

The shop near here have things like calendars and posters they display. I've never used them but they seem pretty good for those uses. But for gallery-quality prints or delivering high-quality prints to clients I think you'd want work done on dedicated photo paper and such, not poster or calendar paper.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go to a local photo shop.

From what I've heard a lot of people on this board use them and are very pleased with the results.

I used them for some class projects in the past. I was really happy with the quality when it cropped correctly. WHEN it cropped correctly.... Sometimes it was just a hit and a miss.

It is not hit or miss if the PP person and the customer know what they're doing which involve proper soft-proofing and profiling of the individual printer used...the sort of thing that we all supposed to do.

Same file and same printer with same work flow. 3 came out well. 2 came out off center. I think it's hit or miss.

I'm not sure what you are describing here -- are you saying you sent an image to them that you had not cropped to the desired print dimensions, that you expected Costco to do the cropping for you and they didn't get the crop the way you wanted? Was this done through a kiosk or something?

It's always best for you to do the cropping yourself to the needed aspect ratio. Having the shot crop for you is asking for trouble. But if you used a kiosk-type (or online) cropping tool and you're saying they just ignored it then you certainly are due a refund or redo.

Our local Kinko's stores have a kiosk that you can stick your memory card in and print up to 8x10's with like Burning Clown said. Since it's mostly automated, they have a tendency to goof up every once in a while.
