Possbible Canon EF-S 15-60 IS F2.8???

Just looking on canon rumors and saw this - Canon EF-S 15-60mm IS F/2.8

If it's as sharp as the 17-55, I'm in! A great range and 2.8 on top of that.

The first time I saw the news I thought it was going to be a new L lens, but being an EF-S does not interest me at all.

1. It will easily retail for $1,200. Maybe closer to $1,600.
2. I hope this will cause the current 17-55mm to drop in price.

L designator has nothing to do with that, the build quality does. It doesn't bug some and is a huge deal stopper for others, myself included. The topic was beaten to death already, no point to reiterate through this here again.

The IQ of the 17-55mm 2.8 is L and then some. The build really is lousy. I hope Canon addressed the dust issue in designing the new lens.

WHo cares if its an L :S its build and capability that interests me... f2.8 at 15mm, IS will be improved to the 4 stop IS system. Also i have the 15-85, and the build is really nice and solid, the only thing it lacks is weather sealing.

Again would be really nice if the 15-60mm has it!

I have had the 17-55 2.8 since it was first available, I have been very fortunate I guess, I have not had any problems with internal dust. Used in dusty environment , yes, have felt a need to clean the lens and camera externally often. My experience has not verified the, I think may be, over stated dust problem.

Dust really isn't an issue as far as IQ goes, atleast not on glass.
Sigh, and here I was hoping they'd release a weather sealed EF-S lens finally.
Meh. Still, it'll probably kick down the price on 17-55mm F2.8 lenses(and I plan on buying one), so hooray I guess.

With Canon's current pricing strategy I would expect it to be on the higher end. The current "old" EFS 17-55 is $1100 street price so I would expect it to start off at $2000 for early adopters and drop closer to the $1500- $1600 range 6 or so months later.

If Canon does this however it will probably not be as good a seller since most crop cameras are sold to soccer moms and the like who would likely not stomach a lens that expensive. so it may surprise me?

-2mm on the bottom and +5 on the top ? Unless it really has more to offer than the 17-55 it doesn't make much sense from a marketing standpoint .

My first thought exactly.

But maybe they just touched up the build quality, and the occuring dust and IS failure problems...

But hey, its a rumor. Maybe it will take just as long as the infamous 24-70 2.8L IS
